Up until the end of the Regency period, only gentlemen were entitled to wear signet rings. Each of those rings had a seal which was unique to the gentleman who wore it. Today the tradition of wearing a signet ring with a family crest is still very popular with both ladies and gentlemen especially in the city of London.
