Onyx was very popular in Victorian times, utilised because of its dark and opaque appearance that compliments many coloured gemstones especially onyx.
Onyx was also used extensively by jewellery designers in the 1930s art deco period where they used bold lines and geometric shapes with bold contrasting colours often mixing onyx with sparkling white diamonds because of the perfect contrast of the black and white.
