Measurements: – 10mm x 8mm.

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek αμέθυστος amethystos from α- a-, “not” and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθώ metho, “intoxicate”, a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

Caring for your Amethyst necklace.
Amethyst is quite hard. It has fair to good toughness, which makes it a durable gemstone for daily use. However, the gem should be protected from extreme heat and steam cleaning. Also, the use of any harsh chemicals and cleaners should be avoided. It is safe to clean Amethyst using ultrasonic cleaners. Use warm, soapy water to clean the gemstone. After cleaning, rinse in fresh water to remove all soapy residue and wipe with a soft cloth to dry.

Amethyst forms in hollow, crystal lined boulders called geodes and forms over millions of years embedded in its host rock. The most desired colour of Amethyst is a medium to deep Purple.

Amethyst’s use in jewellery can be traced back as far as the Neolithic period (approximately 4,000 BC) and samples of amethyst in gold rings have been uncovered in burial sites from around 2,400 BC.

Amethyst is the birthstone for February and is also known to be the official gemstone for Wednesdays. It is also the gemstone for the 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries. The gem features a trigonal crystal structure that occurs in many shades, from a light, slightly lavender pinkish to a deep purple similar to that of the Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Amethyst can also have slight, shades of different colours such as reds and blues when seen from different angles. The colour comes from iron impurities within the stone, without which it would be colourless. The amount of iron within each stone determines how deep the colour will be.

18ct Garnet Butterfly Necklace PCA00404.

Mozambique garnet displays a warm, deep red, ruby-like hue that rivals the beauty of ruby.

One of Mozambique garnet’s special qualities is its high refractive index. That’s what gives this gemstone exceptional brilliance. To the untrained eye they may look like dark rubies, but when light enters in, you will witness a vivid sparkle with a wonderful bright red colour that’s what makes these White-Gold Garnet Butterfly Earrings look so special.

Caring for your garnet necklace.

Where Does the Mozambique Garnets in this 18ct White Gold Garnet Butterfly necklace Come From?
Republic of Mozambique. In South-eastern Africa, Cuamba Mine is an important supplier of high-quality raw mineral materials. Cuamba is a city and district of Niassa Province in Mozambique, lying northwest of Mount Namuli. Before independence, the town was known as Nova Freixo. It lies on the EN8 road, which connects it to the city of Nampula in the east and the Malawian border in the west. Other locations where this variety of garnet is found are Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Madagascar Zimbabwe Thailand, Tanzania and of course Mozambique.

Giving someone a piece of jewellery featuring Mozambique Garnet such as this 18ct White Gold Garnet pendant and chain necklace is believed to be the ultimate declaration of love.
