Love is like a butterfly; it goes where it pleases, and it pleases wherever it goes.

Peridot is most commonly connected to August, and because this is the birthstone for August, it is also a symbol for the Leo star sign. More infrequently, but still relevantly, you will find that this stone is also seen as a symbol and birthstone for Virgo, too. It embodies many of the values that people born in August love.

The August birthstone, peridot, symbolises strength. It is sometimes called the “evening emerald” for its light green colour. It was once believed that the green peridot crystals found in volcanic ashes were the tears of the volcano goddess, Pele. When set in gold, this gem was said to protect the wearer from nightmares.

Peridot (/ˈperɪdɒt/ or) (sometimes called chrysolite) is gem-quality olivine and a silicate mineral with the formula of (Mg, Fe)₂SiO₄. As peridot is a magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite), the formula approaches Mg₂SiO₄. Its green colour depends on the iron content within the structure of the gem. Peridot occurs in silica-deficient rocks such as volcanic basalt and pallasitic meteorites. Peridot is one of only two gems observed to be formed not in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle. Gem-quality peridot is rare to find on Earth’s surface due to its susceptibility to weathering during transportation from deep within the mantle to the surface.
