Famous Black Diamonds.

Sergio is the largest carbonado rough black diamond ever found. Apparently it weighs 3167 carats it was found in Bahia Brazil in 1895. It is believed to be a meteorite from outer space.

The second largest is thought to be the spirit of de Grisogono and weights 312.24 carats. this stone is part of a famous black diamond collection of the Swiss jeweller Fawaz Gruosi . This stone was cut from a 587 carat rough stone.

It is said that Fawaz Gruosi has one of the best collections of black diamonds in the world, he bought another black diamond in 1998 weighing 300.12 carats of rough, it is said to have taken three years to cut and ended up as a 115.34 carat heart shape and was known as the Gruosi diamond. This heart shaped stone is the centrepiece of a necklace crafted in white gold with a further 58.7carats of white diamonds and 14.1 carats of lively, vivid green tsavorite garnets.

Normally diamond cutting does not take three years, however the Gruosi diamond like many other black diamonds, have an unequal amount of soft and hard areas.
As such the Gruosi diamond had to be handled with a steady hand and much patience.
